I heart interpreting

interpreting… Too child-like? Perhaps. But that’s how I feel about it. I love interpreting… or maybe I should say: I “heart” interpreting (I learned from my students that’s how you read the heart symbol).

I’ve been in this profession for 27 years and interpreting has always been good to me. Interpreting has by turns fed me, clothed me, put a roof over my head, led me to my loving husband, inspired me to teach, provided me with the opportunity to meet thousands of brilliant people (colleagues, clients, students, professors) and has opened up a world of possibilities and adventure.

After more than a quarter of a century, you’d think the thrill would be gone, but this profession is as mysterious and magical to me as the first day I attempted to do “simul” in a booth (or “simo”, as we used to call it back then). I’d like to explore some of that magic in this blog. My reflections may be about resources, about the market, about learning, about training… or simply about “doing” this great art we call interpreting.

I don’t know if I’ll get to write as often as I’d like (work, and that pesky day-to-day living, usually take up most of my time), but I’ll try to make it to this writing space as often as I can.

I will write in one of my two dominant languages (Spanish or English), depending on the mood. Along the way, I hope to meet other interpreters who love this great profession as much as I do.

Happy reading!
